Suicidal Angels - Sanctify The Darkness
Genre: Thrash
Rating: 9/11
Hellenic thrash band Suicidal Angels (Now signed to Nuclear Blast Records.) have been carving their way through the modern extreme metal trends with a brand of metal that is made of brute strength and no holds barred. A metal derived from the black stone wielder of old school itself. A metal so pure and un-breakable that it's thought to have been forged by the evil one himself. This style of metal is known as thrash !!!. Sanctify The Darkness is not an album filled with the latest technical prodigies or so over thought that it manages to lose it's feel. Instead what you get is something simple yet brutal, enlightening yet evil and dark, raw and still well produced. This albums is stripped down to essentials yet filled with substance and talent to make it authentic.
If you are familiar with older material from Suicidal Angels do not fear, they have kept in tradition with those discs while perfecting a craft and growing as a band. This offering is 11 tracks of thrash metal with a great deal of blasphemous overtones and notable death metal elements ... something for old and new fans alike. The opening track "Bloodthirst" kicks in with a sabbath like riff that spawns an endless slaughter of hell fire bent on destruction and annihilation. If that's not enough to gain interest then try and sink your teeth into "The Pestilence Of Saints". This is an all out blitz that is reeking havoc on the christian faith and all it's hypocrisies. This song is everything that defines the thrash genre and then some. From it's ultra fast tempo with frequent cymbal crashes to the mighty fret board riffing, the crunchy rhythm guitars, bass and drums followed by a heavier than hell mid paced break of headbanging utopia. The solo and chorus are almost enchanting to the point of a loyal army in march of war. "Inquisition" rolls through some blackish death metal style strumming accompanied by a spell casting vocal and riff. Then there is " ... Lies" and "No More Illusion", a conjuring of 80's thrash metal if I've ever heard it. These songs are so aggressive that they close-line you from behind to leave you out cold on the floor, awakening only to ask what the fuck just hit you. "Atheist" is a little more mild if you can believe that. A consistent gallop with a sing along chorus ... well a little darker than that but surely a song you can relate with. There is a short instrumental that leads into the next track "Dark Abyss (your fate is colored black)". What can I say ... this is more bad ass thrash with grinding riffs, spat and shouted vocals with drumming equal to that of awesome and a bass guitar digging in to hold down the fort. There are plenty of staple guitar riffs and solos ripping through this disc that should have any fan of thrash wanting to ensure the possession of this album.
Perhaps this review is a bit over done with it's metaphors and comparisons but in all honesty I could have written something for this disc in 4 words ... simple, pure and authentic. Suicidal Angels are yielding a brutal blend of fire and steel. From the darkest reaches of hell they have emerged to lay claim to the great sword of thrash and reap terror on all non believers. This band are one of the very best bands of modern day that still have a classic thrash sound without sounding dated or cloned. If you are into bands like Slayer, Destruction and Kreator then you have to give these guys a listen. Their latest release "Sanctify The Darkness" is nothing breaking new ground but it sure as hell is something to be reckoned with. These guys know who and what they are and give it to you straight without smoke and mirrors. Prepare to be slain.
