Kaos - The Pits Of Existence

Genre: Thrash Metal

Rating: 10/11

What we have here is pure fucking thrash !. Kaos come from an area known for producing some of the best thrash acts in history. They have an assault of demos and two full length releases behind them since the late eighties and now with their latest  release "The Pits Of Existence" they are receiving praise that has been long overdue and greatly deserved. Kaos is very relevant in todays metal strongholds and as much a part of the bay area scene as those legendary bands from a time long ago. With so  many bands resurging as of late or new ones inspired by the old school style Kaos have remained true to themselves and true to the genre without sounding dated.

From "Enter Insanity" (with it's emergency alert warning) through "Exit Reality" (the end of everything) The Pits Of Existence is a true testament to epic thrash. This disc spins like an imprisoned tornado about to break loose and reign it's destruction upon  the world. "Bleed Some More" and "Pits Of Existence" both set the stage with attitude and authority. A relentless attack of crushing guitars and stout vocals with lyrics depicting the bottomless pits of hell. "Let God Sort Them Out" is perhaps an instant pit  anthem with it's commanding vocals and it's chunky guitar gallop. "Blood Sacrifice" leads in with some sweet melodic guitar melody picking it's way to an almost soft spoken vocal, but don't be expecting a ballad because you will not get it. This is a very  strong tune for all instruments including the vocals but with this one I'm blown away the most in it's amazing lead solos. "Out Of Time" and "Screaming In The Mirror" continue with the riff, the whole riff and nothing but the riff ... an endless onslaught of  thick heavy rhythms that bleed your mind of any boredom disease. "Sludge" is their slowest tune in a sense but fear not it delivers the goods. With a magnitude of 9.0 this heavy onrush of groove, deep growls and screaming vocals marches to the beat of it's  own drum and flat out punches you in the face. "Tear Us Apart" has one of the most memorable lyric chants in "death will bring us together". With guitars chords ringing out with flanger, a zealous bass barrage and blast of drums, this has to be a staple in the  live set list. "Soul To Give" imposes it's will and I find myself headbanging in an uncontrollable trance. The Hell fire percussion and spine chilling vocals leave me hungry for more but we are at the end of this disc. Last but not least is "Exit Reality" a soulful  guitar number that I can not find the words to describe. It's something you have to hear, to feel it for yourself ... it's a very moving piece. It's like after all the anger, all the aggression, all the questioning of faith and things to come you find yourself sad and  excepting the way things are. Try to wrap your mind around that. The albums art work is done by Tuomas Pekkarinent and shows what looks to be a lost battle of angels that have fallen and the lyrical content takes on a similar direction of a hell inspired  theme, (though I've been known to be wrong).

So... The Pits Of Existence serves up a fresh kick in the teeth with  old school bay area style thrash with maybe a touch of hardcore punk influences finding their way into a couple areas. A classic sound that shows a great deal of diversity and  creativeness while taking some liberties and pushing the envelope of extreme metal. This is a legitimate thrash album for modern day metallists looking for inspiring no holds barred thrash metal the way it was forged so long ago. Kaos are a band of honor  and prestige that fulfill a journey into music of meaning. If you like your thrash authentic, aggressive, group rhythmic chants, dynamic mind blowing riffs with  lead guitar solos that haunt you long after they have passed leaving you to spin the disc once more  in complete awe !, Then you have found a superlative collection of songs that equal one bad-ass thrash metal album. This has got to be one of the best albums of the year (setting the level very high) and surely one to at least consider as an essential among  all the all time.
